- Clusters
Clusters are groups of companies and associated institutions characteristic of geographic proximity, interconnected in certain areas and sharing technologies and knowledge. They usually exist in defined geographic concentrations with easy communication, logistics and easily accessible high-skilled labour force (M. Porter). Clusters increase interaction of businesses and research establishments; social industrial relations of businesses afford their specialization, economy of scale, allow access to unique specialized resources and thus increase competitive advantage of both companies in the cluster and the entire region.
- Research, study and business centers (valleys)
The need for better interaction between research, study and business establishments has been emphasized in Lithuania’s long-term strategic documents. Aiming at better interaction of the research and studies system with economic sectors as well as perspective technology development and introduction to knowledge-intense business sectors, development of integrated research, study and business centers has been started in Lithuania.
- National technology platforms
The national technology platform is an association of business enterprises representing a specific economic sector, research establishments and representatives of certain financial groups, aimed, via mobilization of efforts of business and research communities, to pursue activities of the most viable sectors in order to achieve a break-through of the national economy on the global scale.
- European Technology Platforms
The European Technology Platforms (ETPs) represent Europe’s innovation initiative aiming to identify development trends Europe-wide to address key challenges at the EU level. ETPs are instrumental in fostering public-private partnership of research activities in key fields of technology at the European level.
- Joint Technology Initiatives
Within the framework of the Lisbon objectives the European Union must take a global economic and political leadership in at least a number of areas, which has led to the development of Joint Technology Initiatives (JTIs) resulting from the ETPs activities.
- European Institute of Innovation and Technology
The European Commission, along with other EU Member States, has adopted a regulation for the establishment of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT). The unique feature of the EIT is bringing excellence in innovation, research and higher education together. The EIT initiative will be implemented in the process of establishment of Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KICs). Read more
- European Business and Innovation Centre
In 2008, the European Commission initiated the establishment of the Enterprise Europe Network. Officially launched on 2 February 2008 in Brussels, the Network is already present in more than 40 countries with more than 600 business support centers Europe-wide which employ around 4000 experienced staff.
In Lithuania, the Enterprise Europe Network was launched on 1 January 2008. It has been rendering services to small and medium enterprises in the field of business development and introduction of innovation
IRE - Innovating Regions in Europe Network is aimed at enhancement of global competitiveness of the regions of Europe and promotion of innovative policies; it also serve a unique platform for cooperation and practice sharing by the regions.
